Behind every preventable loss is a story of being unheard, unseen, or unsupported. Black women are navigating a system where warning signs are missed and care is not consistent, and unfortunately has cost them their lives.

We cannot accept preventable as normal.

We have to stand up & stand for black mothers.

The story doesn’t end at birth. Black women deserve care, protection, and support in the quiet, vulnerable moments after the baby arrive.

During this time the healing is just beginning. Let our care be continuous and not conditional 🤍✨

As we approach Black Maternal Health Week, it’s imperative to center real change of the overlooked realities that black mothers face.

Their health disparities (such as being 2-3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women) shall continue to be pushed into a national focus.

Black mothers are still facing higher risks in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Not because of biology, but because of gaps in care, bias, and being unheard.

This is why change in resources is urgent.

Suzanne believes maternal care for black mothers should look different. Care that protects Black mothers at every stage, not just when it’s convenient.

They told her it was too early.
But she listened to her body & knew otherwise.

When @taylornicole.official felt her body shifting into labor, she trusted that inner voice. Hours later, she arrived at the hospital already 6 cm dilated.

In the middle of uncertainty, being dismissed, and even losing support from her doula, she had to advocate for herself in ways she never imagined. And in those moments, her strength showed up through her voice, and through her mother standing beside her.

20 hours later, none of the noise mattered.
Only one thing did—meeting her baby.

Today we honor a God-given gift to this world. A true atmosphere shifter. A fortified woman, who didn’t just make history, but rebuilt it from the ground up. 🤍

At 31, Aja became the youngest mayor ever elected in Compton, turning bold heavenly vision into $3 billion in investment, cutting unemployment in half, and launching the largest city-based guaranteed income program in the country. Since leaving office, her impact in the public sector has only multiplied, expanding through strategic partnerships, advisory roles, and cross-sector collaborations that continue to shape policy, unlock capital, and drive place-based transformation in communities across the country.

Beyond what can be measured in systems, policy, or progress, the way she has touched people personally is something else entirely. It is deep. It is real. It is lasting. She has been a healer to many, seen and unseen. A sent one, by the grace of God, who loves with intention, serves with sacrifice, and pours without holding back. And the evidence of that isn’t just in outcomes, it’s in the lives she’s helped restore.

She operates in full activation as a mother, solutionist, founder, leader, growth expert, voice for the people, and intercessor. A visionary who lives to please God, build with Him, and bring others up with her.

And she’s just getting started. The work God has begun in her is set to illuminate & transform the world as we know it.

Gestational diabetes affects more women than we realize. Sadly, many mothers don’t know what it is until they’re diagnosed.

It’s not about blame. It’s about awareness, support, and care.

When we understand what’s happening in the body, we can advocate for healthier pregnancies and better outcomes for both mom and baby.

From the very beginning, her pregnancy felt like a gift.

Even with daily finger pricks and constant monitoring from gestational diabetes, she genuinely loved her pregnancy - feeling her baby move, watching her body change & knowing her daughter was growing stronger each day.

Early on, she knew they’d have a big baby.

At 40 weeks, with no signs of labor, she was induced, yet, trusting the process.

At first, everything was moving the way it should with progress, hope & anticipation.

Until it wasn’t.

She couldn’t dilate past 7 centimeters.
Her baby’s heart rate began to drop.
The room shifted.

And just like that, the words many mothers don’t plans for—emergency C-section.

The weight of a fear and disappointment unraveled in real time as she signed the surgery consent form.

But in that moment, her husband reminded her of something deeper:
“No matter how she gets here, we just need to make sure she gets here safely.”

And everything changed with the comfort of his reassurance.

Moments later, in a room filled with uncertainty, they the sound of life—
a tiny cry.

The sound that made every fear, every tear, every unexpected turn… worth it.

Their daughter arrived strong.
9 lbs, 3 oz of love & resilience.

A reminder that birth doesn’t always go as planned, but it can still be powerful, beautiful, and whole.

@kendrataulofficial’s journey into motherhood began earlier than expected when her son, King, was born prematurely—delicate, yet filled with purpose. In the face of uncertainty and the risks that come with prematurity, she chose to believe.

She believed he would live.

She believed he would be sustained.

She named him King - declaring strength, authority, leadership, and nobility over his life from the very beginning.

Where fear tried to take hold, Kendra stood firm in faith. And today, King is a testament that he was designed to defy all odds.

Today is Maternal Health Awareness Day.

In the United States, maternal health remains a crisis.

Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, and nearly 80% of these deaths are preventable. 80% of the women that lost their lives, should have had access to the care they deserved - and lived.

In Los Angeles County, Black mothers continue to experience some of the highest rates of severe maternal complications, driven not by biology, but by gaps in access, advocacy, and culturally grounded care.

MyBirthLA was created to address system failure and support those filling the gap with direct support + intervention.

MyBirthLA is a digital community to help cultivate maternal health and address system failure through thoughtful education + access, designed by and for Black mothers in Los Angeles. In partnership with doulas, clinicians, mental health providers, and community leaders, we are building a nurturing, affirming ecosystem rooted in evidence, local resources, and wrapped in dignity + love.

This work centers the health and vitality of Black women. It’s also a celebration of our resilience.

We’re designing a system and space that ensures Black mothers are equipped and upheld throughout their birth journey and postpartum.

We look forward to sharing stories of resilience and and uplifting providers that are offering dignified and essential care to Black mothers.
